Traumatic Brain Injury May Be an Independent Risk Factor for Ischemic Stroke
When traumatic brain injury (TBI) victims are compensated for their accidents, it is critical that aspects of their injury are considered. This includes the potential long-term risk of certain complications, such as mortality or other complications. A study, which determined that TBI could be an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke, may need to be one of those factored considerations. The following explains further, and provides you with some information on how you can pursue full and fair compensation for your traumatic brain injury.
In a study that compared 435,630 people with traumatic brain injury and 736,723 without, researchers found an increased risk of ischemic stroke among those with a previous TBI injury. Overall, the comparison between the two groups who suffered an ischemic stroke – 1.1 percent of the TBI group and 0.9 percent of those who had not experienced a head injury – might seem almost negligible. Yet, when researchers adjusted for other risk factors, they found that the TBI group was 30 percent more likely to experience a stroke. This still leaves the individual risk low. However, the overall risk is high enough that it could be considered an independent factor for stroke.
Why This Study MattersThe biggest reason that this study matters is that it could help doctors identify a group that is at high risk of being misdiagnosed for stroke (younger patients with no history of heart disease). However, there are other reasons that this information could be considered relevant. It could help doctors determine preventative methods for those that have suffered a TBI but have no other risk factors. It could also be used as a factor in a personal injury case – especially if that case occurs after a stroke occurs. Of course, every situation is different, so it is suggested that victims speak with an experienced personal injury attorney to determine if or when such evidence might be relevant in a case.
