In a study that compared 435,630 people with traumatic brain injury and 736,723 without, researchers found an increased risk of ischemic stroke among those with a previous TBI injury. Yet, when researchers adjusted for other risk factors, they found that the TBI group was 30 percent more likely to experience a stroke. This still leaves the individual risk low. However, the overall risk is high enough that it could be considered an independent factor for stroke.

The biggest reason that this study matters is that it could help doctors identify a group that is at high risk of being misdiagnosed for stroke (younger patients with no history of heart disease).
