The Tragic Impact of a Bus Accident
Public and mass transit provide numerous benefits to society, including the reduced impact on emissions and overall cost-effectiveness. Unfortunately, those benefits seem to come at a steep price. Per registered vehicle, buses and other commercial vehicles have a higher risk of fatality than other passenger vehicles. Furthermore, the risk is not just for the passengers themselves, but also for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists, who are all too often victims in bus crashes. Because this risk for tragedy exists, every road user should know their rights.
In the early morning hours of October 23, a USA Holiday bus crashed into a slow-moving tractor-trailer near Palm Springs on Interstate 10. A total of 13 passengers were killed, and another 31 were injured, four of which are currently in critical condition. An investigation as to why the crash might have occurred is ongoing, but authorities say there is currently no indication that the driver had applied the brakes before smashing into the truck. No skid marks were found.
This tragedy highlights just how massive the impact of a bus accident can be. Certainly, passenger vehicle crashes can be just as devastating to those who are affected. Yet it is the numerous passengers that creates the serious and concerning propensity for mass harm, grief, and pain.
Transit Vehicles Have a Safety Obligation to the PublicBecause they are responsible for safely transporting numerous passengers at once, bus and other commercial transit vehicles are held to a higher standard. They, and their drivers, must comply with certain rules and regulations, including restrictions on how long a driver can be behind the wheel. Further, they can be held liable when they neglect to follow the imposed regulations. This includes cases in which a driver or bus company’s actions or inaction causes the wrongful death of a passenger or another road user.
Getting the Compensation You DeserveIf you or someone you love has been injured or wrongfully killed in a bus or transit accident, it is critical that you seek skilled legal assistance with your case. This is due, in part, to the regulatory guidelines that govern bus and other commercial vehicles, but it is also because there may be multiple negligent parties involved. A full investigation, which can be done by your lawyer, can ensure that all responsible parties are held liable for their part in the death or injury of your loved one.
