Do Men and Women Recover From Injuries Differently?

Men Women InjuriesMale and female bodies are different. Although there are extreme outliers in both sexes and some individuals choose to change their sex by taking artificial hormones and surgery to alter their appearance, male and female bodies have different bone structure, muscle mass, and levels of various hormones. Because of these innate differences, men and women can experience injuries and recovery differently. If you have been injured in a workplace accident, your gender can affect how you recover. Discuss these gender differences with your doctor, especially if you are female. The majority of individuals who suffer workplace injuries are male and because of this, much of the literature available about recovering from these types of injuries is geared toward male readers.

Recovering From Brain Injuries

Brain injuries are one area where men and women can expect significantly different recovery experiences. Women tend to have more severe concussion symptoms than men. However, men can take longer than women to recover from their concussions. In studies of individuals who are years past their concussions, women were found to have better memory and language skills while men were found to have better visual analytic skills. However, this could be due to individuals' increased strength in these areas prior to their concussions and persisting stereotypes about each sex.

Recovering From Physical Injuries

Because men, in general, have a greater muscle mass than women and build muscle more easily, men can often recover from physical injuries more efficiently than women. Women who suffer injuries like strains, sprains, and injuries that require the patient to avoid strenuous activity should be aware of their how they can safely maintain their muscle tone during their recovery. Low-stress exercise like yoga can be a great way for any injured individual to maintain his or her muscle tone. Consuming more protein, such as through nutritional supplements, can also help an injury victim build and maintain muscle.

Gender-Specific Risk

It is also important that individuals are aware of the injuries they are more susceptible to suffer because of their gender. Women are more likely than men to suffer knee injuries and because of differing hip structures between the sexes, men and women tend to suffer different types of musculoskeletal injuries in the legs. If you suffer from a knee, leg, or hip injury, talk to your doctor about the sex-based differences between these injuries so you can focus on the type of recovery treatment that will work effectively for your body.

I suffered a severe spinal injury while working as a farm mechanic in the Salinas Valley. The attorneys -Tim McMahon and Mark Sigala were fantastic from the beginning. They fought for me over 3 long years and in the end, we won a difficult liability case against the farm company who was using dangerous equipment. The defendants in the case tried everything to put the blame on me and even claimed I was their employee in order to avoid civil responsibility. Tim and Mark never gave up on me and my case. I cannot recommend them highly enough. They are fighters. Adrian A.
