Defective Infant Pain Reliever Recalled From Multiple Stores
When your child is in pain, you would do almost anything to help them. For ailments common to infants, such as teething and fevers, ibuprofen is a seemingly harmless over-the-counter medicine that can temporarily relieve them of their discomfort. However, parents should be aware of a recent statement from a pharmaceutical company called for the recall of three lots of defective ibuprofen that was sold as store brands in multiple stores. When children are injured by dangerous drugs or other defective products, it is important to work with a personal injury attorney to determine the options for pursuing compensation.
Tris Pharma, Inc. has recalled three lots of their liquid infant medicine amid concerns that the lots could have higher concentrations of ibuprofen, which could lead to inadvertent overdosing. The lots were sold at stores such as Walmart, CVS, and Family Dollar under the stores’ generic brands. The recalled lots are packaged in .5 oz bottles with the label, “Infant’s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension.” The bottles are also labeled with each store’s brand: Walmart’s “Equate,” CVS’s “CVS Health,” and Family Dollar’s “Family Wellness.”
Possible Side Effects of Ibuprofen OveruseThe proper dosage of ibuprofen for infants and children varies based on the child’s weight and the concentration of the medication. The recalled medication is labeled to have a concentration of 50 mg of ibuprofen for every 1.25 mL of medication, but that may not be accurate. An overdose of medication can cause a child to have side effects such as:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea/vomiting
- Low blood pressure
- Little to no urine production
- Slow or difficult breathing
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Irreversible kidney damage
Though no cases of health issues due to the recalled ibuprofen have been reported, consumers who have purchased these products are urged to either return the medication to the store where it was purchased or throw it away.
